“A fertile spot in a desert where water is found,” an oasis is the basis for this “20th Century Cameo” necklace. We have made a two-sided pendant necklace depicting juxtaposed ideas of what this fertile spot can represent. The central element in each is a vintage steel toy gas tank, and a fabricated red safety wheel that acts as the spinner. One side is a backyard pool inside a silver picket fence that is surrounded by lovely green grass. The other is a sandy desert with a gas can dripping oil and blood. How are these landscapes the same, and how are they different? How do we bring the oasis to our lives? The connecting theme is pipelines, and we have fabricated pipes in brass and sterling silver to frame each cameo and to create the long pipeline necklace with black onyx bead stations so as to remind us that human achievements, resources and power are riddled with unseen consequences.
